Parents need to know that Rabbids Travel in Time 3D is a slapstick-filled platform game with loads of Saturday morning cartoon-like violence. The Rabbids are irreverent (proudly burping and beating on each other), but rather than the minigames of this title's console cousin, this 3DS version is more similar to the Mario and Sonic platform games, where characters must avoid obstacles, collect coins, and jump a lot. While there's plenty of hazards and some violence, it's all very cartoony and meant to be silly.
RABBIDS TRAVEL IN TIME 3D sets these wacky rabbit-like characters cavorting around a history museum where they stumble upon a washing machine that's also a time machine. No... really! This takes one of the antic-prone bunnies back to several historical periods, from pre-historic to Ancient Egypt to the Middle Ages. In each time frame, your Rabbid will collect coins, wardrobe additions, and other goodies.
The Raving Rabbids series is one of the more reliable funny franchises in gaming, but that's largely due to the off-the-wall mini-games developers come up with. In Rabbids Travel in Time 3D, the bug-eyed bunnies abandon that for a straight platform game and it isn't a great fit. The game's certainly not difficult and as a platform game itself, it's not bad (though hardly spectacular). But by so severely restricting the Rabbids and their environment, it takes a lot of fun out of the franchise. 3D effects are used well in the game, and thankfully sparingly, but it's not enough to make a fair game into a good or great one.
Families can talk about if you had a time machine, where would you want to go in history?
Do the game's 3D effects make it better or worse than a 2D game?
What makes these Rabbids characters so amusing?
