Parents need to know that this game contains graphic violence and gore. It's played from an immersive first-person perspective where the fight is against an alien race instead of humans. However, friendly fire is part of the game, so you can shoot other soldiers and watch the blood fly. Expect to see gory close-ups of heads being shot off and blood raining down as creatures explode. Characters under duress swear. Parents should be aware that the game allows for online play; Common Sense Media does not recommend unsupervised online play for anyone under the age of 12.
RESISTANCE: FALL OF MAN is a first-person shooter that lets you, as an American soldier stationed in the U.K., lead the fight to rid the world of a vicious alien race bent on global domination. Interestingly, the game takes place in an alternative mid-20th century, one where World War II didn't happen -- though the death toll is far worse in this scenario. You and your squad mates must use high-tech weaponry to take down these creatures one by one.
Thanks to the PS3's technical horsepower, the aliens are realistically creepy and the atmospheric indoor and outdoor environments help add to the suspension of disbelief. The game's multi-channel surround sound is extraordinary: You can hear quiet footsteps on a creaking wood floor above your head that will send shivers down your spine. The enemy artificial intelligence (A.I.) is smart and aggressive, but players can also log online to play against human opponents. In fact, you can engage in matches on huge maps supporting up to 40 players.
While not quite as good as Microsoft Game Studios' gritty Gears of War for the Xbox 360, Resistance: Fall of Man is a worthy shooter for the PS3. Players will also enjoy the first official game "update" with added multiplayer features, some improved graphics, and other extras.
Families can talk about what it might be like if Earth were ever invaded by aliens. Does the motion-sensing controller add to your immersion in this game? Why are you attracted to this kind of shooter? If the enemy were humans instead of scary-looking aliens, would you want to play this game?
