Rise of the Argonauts (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Windows)

common sense media says

Painfully dull action adventure based on Greek mythology.

parents & educators say

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this is a very violent action role-playing game. As the Greek mythological figure Jason, players use weapons like spears, maces, and swords to brutally hack and gore mythological creatures. Blood gushes from enemies freely and remains in the scene. Using finishing moves, players can also behead or decapitate foes. The women portrayed are also often scantily clad.

Educational value: Good but bloody way to learn some of the notable figures in Greek mythology.
Positive messages: You play as the hero Jason, who is on an epic journey to find the Golden Fleece.
Violence: Jason uses a sword, spear, mace, and shield to brutally bash enemies. Blood spatters freely as he strikes enemies. Sometimes, Jason can behead or decapitate enemies at the torso with finishing blows and the blood will stay in the scene.
Sex: Most of the women in the game wear pretty revealing clothing.
Language: Not applicable.
Consumerism: Not applicable.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Not applicable.

What's the story?

What's the story?

RISE OF THE ARGONAUTS is a stale action adventure influenced by Greek mythology. Players take control of Jason, best known in Greek lore for his quest to retrieve the Golden Fleece. With the aid of Hercules and a band of allies, Jason searches for the Fleece to resurrect his slain bride-to-be. Jason also enlists the aid of four Greek Gods: Ares, Apollo, Athena, and Hermes. Each deity gives Jason special attacks and powers he can use to thwart foes. To earn these abilities, Jason must complete certain objectives and then sacrifice these deeds to the gods. In return, players earn aspect points to use toward unlocking new attacks. Jason doesn't head to battle unarmed, however. He tears through enemies using a mace, spear, sword, and shield.

If video gaming gods existed, their version of hell might be best encapsulated by Codemasters' Rise of Argonauts. This game fails miserably with its use of dialog. The characters simply talk far too much. Players can decide how they respond to other characters in conversation. The answers range from diplomatic responses to angry replies. However, none of these reactions result in tangible consequences, like affecting relationships with characters. It doesn't help either that the dialogue overall is incredibly boring.

When you finally earn the opportunity to fight, you'll learn it's very disappointing. Combat is repetitive, and dispatching foes requires little effort. In fact, there's very little need to lean on the gods and their powers since opponents are such pushovers. The subject matter focused on Greek mythology is epic, but the game itself fails to rise to those standards.

boring and brutal
me and my 13 year old brother played this for about 20 minutes before we decided it was to brutal.you can vivisect (cut in half) enemies decapitate(behead) and impale(stab) all with blood. in the 20 minutes we played the player had to repeatedly slam an assassin with a mace until blood covered the screen after that it was just walking around the castle randomly with noting to do but open doors. a pointless waste of money
