Scarface: The World Is Yours (PlayStation 2, Windows)

common sense media says

Decent but imitative violent game – not for kids.

parents & educators say

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this violent, profane action game is for adults only. Players control an aspiring drug kingpin, and gameplay involves buying and selling drugs and killing hundreds of people. The graphic violence frequently involves decapitation and other body mutilation. The language includes an incredible amount of swearing and plenty of coarse sexual references. The criminal world depicted in the game includes prostitution, corrupt police, and gambling.

Educational value: Not applicable.
Positive messages: The hero is a homicidal drug dealer and the cops are corrupt. Women are treated as sex objects and even collected as a reward for game progress.
Violence: Tons of shooting. Players can also hack and slash enemies with machetes and chainsaws. Blood sprays. Heads and body parts can be chopped off.
Sex: No nudity, but lots of curse-laden sexual talk. The game also shows women engaged in prostitution.
Language: A contender for most cursing in any video game ever. If you can imagine it, it is probably spoken in this game.
Consumerism: Based on a movie of the same name. Includes a licensed soundtrack.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: You play as a cocaine dealer. Characters are shown smoking, drinking, and taking drugs. In-game collectables include drinking and drug paraphernalia.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
Families can talk about the lingering appeal of the Tony Montana character and gangsters in popular culture. Why has Scarface held the public's attention for more than 20 years? Is Tony's brand of hyper-aggressive self-actualization admirable or just antisocial? Why is it fun to play as an antihero? Families may also wish to discuss the way games are used to promote movies and vice-versa. If you like a movie, are you more likely to want a game based on the movie?

What's the story?

What's the story?
SCARFACE: THE WORLD IS YOURS is essentially a Grand Theft Auto (GTA) clone. Like the series it is so clearly based on, Scarface lets players indulge in heaps of antisocial violence in a large virtual world populated by hookers, hustlers, and homicidal maniacs. In the 1983 film, Tony Montana is shot to death in his mansion, a victim of the violent, druggy world he built. In the game, Tony makes a last-minute escape and loses everything except his life: Players control Tony as he tries to re-build his reputation, defeat rival gangs, and reclaim the turf he needs to begin selling massive amounts of drugs.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

The first few hours are a profane, bloody blast. The game world of Scarface is huge and beautiful. But as the game progresses, players will find themselves doing little else besides driving through ever-longer delivery missions and blasting through larger crowds of enemies. The environments don't provide a lot of incentive to explore.

In some ways, Scarface rises above many videogames based on movies: It looks great, has hours and hours of playtime, and the action is fast and thrilling. But unlike the GTA games, Scarface fails to create a sense of freedom or sly satire. It is a decent third-person action game with some intense shooting and fun driving challenges. However, repetitive play undermines the entertainment value.

It's ok : /
YES there is sex scenes. He has sexual relations with a prostitute at one point. No doubt about it this is a violent, drug-filled game. I would recommend it for mostly adults. But you know your kids. Are they mature enough to handle this behavior without trying to imitate it? But definately older teens only!

i think thaty you are all over reacting! So what if you deal coke? the sooner that your kids learn that not everyone out there is a good person, the better. P.S Tony is awsome and he is just misunderstood

Don't judge it just because it's scarface!!!!
I have this game. There is really nothing TOO sexual, girls wear bikinis and short skirts but thats it, nothiing bad is shown.Tony says that if he finds his x wife Elvie, he's gonna give her the f**k of a life time, but he never does. The violence isn't half as bad as other games.Language, parents need to just face the fact that they are words!!!!I know most kids hear them every single day.Just be cool parents because this game isn't even half as bad as other games.Peace out!

Oh Parents...
Scarface...what can you say? What adult has NOT seen the movie Scarface? The only thing I need to say about this game is....would you let your kids watch it? If so, then perhaps Scarface is the game for them; however, if you dont want your children idolizing a cuban drug lord by the name of Tony Montana, then perhaps this game is NOT for them. Be realistic people.

A step below GTA... In allot of ways.
Let me break it down in a few ways... From a gameplay perspective:This is pretty good as a game. It could take 30 to 50 hours to beat depending on how good you are at it, so it's worth the money. The action and driving are ok, solid, but not great. It's a GTA clone in most ways. It's a "Sandbox" Style game, but there isn't really much to do other than the missions.. From a moral perspective:Not the worst I've ever seen. The language is constant, possibly the worst I've ever heard in ANY video game. The violence is over-the-top. You can dismember enemies with chainsaws, machine guns, shot guns and pistols. You can also go into a cocaine fueled "Rage mode" From time to time. A majority of the game is about selling coke so you can take over Miami, so it isn't really a "Positive" Game.. There are a few moral things it has that GTA doesn't. For example, Tony refuses to shoot innocent people. You also get into serious trouble for killing cops, so cop killing isn't encouraged. You'll spend most of the game killing rival gangs and driving in either a car or boat. The game isn't as good as GTA from a gameplay perspective, but it's a bit better morally. All in all, I would give this game an 8.5 out of 10.

Mature teens
An excellent and engaging game. It is much more violent than the film though, and it is constant swearing and shooting, the drug theme is prominent to. Should however be a perfect game for mature 13 year olds
