The Sims 3: High-End Loft Stuff (Windows, Mac)

common sense media says

High-end gear gives Sims a taste of materialism.

parents & educators say

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this is an expansion pack for The Sims 3, and players must already have a copy of The Sims 3 installed on their computer for the expansion pack to work. The expansion introduces more than three dozen high-end furnishings, electronics, hairstyles, and clothing for purchase.

Educational value: Some of the furniture pieces might be a good jumping off point to learning about classic furniture designs.
Positive messages: For better or worse, the message here is that expensive, trendy things cost more and make people happier.
Positive role models: This expansion introduces no new characters or role models, but makes the characters of The Sims 3 more materialistic.
Ease of play: Introduces no new gameplay elements - gameplay is identical to The Sims 3.
Violence: Although the expansion itself introduces no new violence into The Sims 3, the core game does include some. Sims can taunt, argue, and get into physical fights with each other. Sims with nasty personality traits may actually feel better after beating up another Sim.
Sex: There's no sexually explicit content introduced in the Stuff Pack itself (unless you count the heart-shaped vibrating bed), but courtship and romance do play a big part in the core The Sims 3 game. Sims with the Romance trait will aspire to a life of having as many lovers and make-out sessions as possible, and if married, will be inclined to cheat on their spouses. Sims can have both heterosexual and same-sex relationships and can be seen jumping under the sheets in bed to make "woohoo" (which is accompanied by groans and giggles).
Language: Not applicable.
Consumerism: This game is an expansion pack for the popular The Sims 3 game and is a way to renew interest in the game. The loft items are typically the most expensive in their category. The manual that comes with this expansion game is presented like a catalog with write-ups on each product.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Not applicable.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
  • Families can talk about whether the expansion pack items were worth the extra money or seemed too expensive?
  • How did your Sims react to the new items?
  • If you could buy a few of these items in real life, which ones would you want?
  • Do you think having nicer things can make a person happier?

What's the story?

What's the story?
THE SIMS 3: HIGH-END LOFT STUFF is a "stuff pack" expansion for EA's The Sims 3 life simulation game that introduces more than three dozen kinds of swanky new furniture pieces, electronics, outfits, and hairstyles all designed to give Sims a taste of the high life in a trendy loft-style dwelling. The goods are all high-end, cutting-edge, and expensive, from the $200 Lumina Technica wall lamp to the opulent three-sided Pythagoras corner bath tub for $2,600.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

While not as quirky or fun as the IKEA stuff pack that EA released for The Sims 2, High-End Loft Stuff will cater to rich Sims that are naturally materialistic and who want to surround themselves with expensive comforts. With only a few exceptions, the new items will be the most expensive things in their respective categories, in spite of the fact that the majority of them don't offer any additional mood boosts over the not-quite-as-high-end items that are already in the game. To acknowledge the tenth anniversary of The Sims franchise, this stuff pack also includes three popular items from past games: the Vibromatic LN3000 heart-shaped bed, the Das Kauker R86 electric guitar, and the All My Fishes home aquarium. This is one expansion pack that's strictly optional, depending on the player's aesthetic sensibilities.
