What parents need to know

Parents need to know that The Sims 3: Master Suite Stuff is what the game's publisher calls a "Stuff Pack." Players must have the computer game The Sims 3 to be able to play. There are no new gameplay modes or features; this pack simply contains a large amount of new items. The theme of this expansion is to help players build the ultimate bedroom, with luxury beds, romantic ambience, and evening wear all part of the set. The experience of the game remains unchanged as this is not a full-blown "Expansion Pack;" there are no new modes that significantly change The Sims 3 experience.

  • The Sims 3 base game, like its predecessors, fosters creativity. However, there is no particular message or direction that the game tries to get across. Players can choose to be mean-spirited and apathetic, or they can be noble and sweet. The game experience is dynamically altered based on the decisions players make, and bad choices are not really condemned.
  • Everything is open-ended, meaning Sims can behave well or poorly based on player choices. Players are encouraged to themselves be good role models, because other Sim characters will react positively if they are treated with respect.
  • Although players can do whatever they want in this game, in order to succeed they need to successfully get a job, multitask, and forge complex social interactions. To keep the Sims healthy, players will need to apply themselves and focus attention on details.
  • Sims can taunt, argue, and get into physical fights with each other. Sims with nasty personality traits may actually feel better after beating up another Sim.
  • Like previous Sims games, courtship and romance play a big part in the game. Sims with the Romance trait will aspire to a life of having as many lovers and make-out sessions as possible, and if married, will be inclined to cheat on their spouses. Sims can have both heterosexual and same-sex relationships and can be seen jumping under the sheets in bed to make "woohoo" (the game's term) -- which is accompanied by groans and giggles. In this expansion, there are many items that are romantic or sensual in nature, including candles, rose petals, and lingerie. These items, however, have no effect on the actual depiction or mechanics of in-game sexuality.
  • Not applicable.
  • This is an expansion pack that does nothing more than add new items to the base game, which you have to own to play this add-on. Players are encouraged to continue buying additional expansion packs and items, thereby growing The Sims 3 franchise.
  • Not applicable.

What's it about?

THE SIMS 3: MASTER SUITE STUFF, like all the "stuff packs" before it, has a specific theme and delivers items that focus exclusively on that theme. In this pack, the scope is rather limited, as the items are designed mainly for use in the bedroom and bathroom, as opposed to the entire house. Among the items available are luxury beds and bathtubs, candles, vases, rose petals, and lingerie. They are all designed to create a romantic experience for the virtual Sims characters.

Is it any good?

The Sims 3: Master Suite Stuff does its job as an expansion pack, allowing the base game to remain fresh. However, The Sims 3 has been out for two and a half years now, and this is the 11th expansion pack. It is starting to feel as though the publisher has reached a saturation point of new content. This pack is quite limited compared to other stuff packs, with only a couple dozen new items and a very narrow scope. Its timing obviously corresponds to Valentine's Day, which makes it timely and appropriate for now, but in comparison to the other expansion packs that have delivered droves of new content, this one seems to fall flat.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about the importance of balancing their real and virtual social lives. Why is it important to set computer limits?

  • How important is it to always have the newest and coolest things? How do you manage this philosophy in real life?

  • Does your Sim character do anything that you would like to do in real life? Do you let it do things you would never do? Why or why not?
