What parents need to know
Parents need to know that Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue is a good-hearted game with very little that might scare or upset young girls (there is one cat-chase scene, but it is pretty mild). It is tied in to the direct-to-DVD movie of the same name.The game does, however, require a lot of reading, so pre-readers will need a parent's help to get through. Parents should also be aware that the game can connect directly to Disney's Pixie Hollow Online web community, and allows kids to download their online fairies for use in the DS game.
What's it about?
You will play as a fairy of your own creation in TINKER BELL AND THE GREAT FAIRY RESCUE. You will not only customize your fairy's look, but choose her special skill as well -- are you a water fairy, an animal fairy, a tinker fairy, or some other sort? Your choice will affect what characters say to you in the game. The main quest of the game has you seeking out six mystical lilies, but in between, you will fly around Pixie Hollow completing varied missions for other fairies, planting a colorful garden, and creating lots of stylish new fairy outfits.
Is it any good?
Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue is an excellent game. It looks great, has wonderfully intuitive controls -- -- and features loads of creative and varied minigame content. It's so much fun just making your fairy fly that you may want to simply ignore your missions for a while and just zip figure-eights through the air. One on-going quest allows you to plant seeds and maintain a gloriously lush garden; another let you use petals from the flowers you grow to create and sew new outfits for your fairy wardrobe. While there is a storyline and a main quest that must eventually be followed, there's an very nice openness to the game that let's you customize your entire experience in Pixie Hollow. Kudos to the developers for doing more than just trying to duplicate the film's plot in a retread video game.
Online interaction: The game can connect go DGamer, Disney generally safe online community where kids can experience safeguarded chat. If your child has an account with Pixie Hollow Online, Disney's fairy-themed virtual world, she can download her custom-created fairy from that site directly into the DS game.
What families can talk about
Families can talk about the avatar creation in the game. Why did you design your fairy to look the way she does? Do you want a fairy that looks like you? Or one who look very different? Why or why not?
