Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 14–16

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

It's an avenue for players to learn the strategies and techniques in Ultimate Fighting.

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

Players participate in Ultimate Fighting matches where their goal is to knockout their opponent or make them submit.
  • Violence:

Players use punches, kicks, knees, elbows, chokeholds and other grapples to either knock out their opponent or force them to quit.  Hard hits send blood shooting to the mat.  Damage to the fighters is shown through cuts and bruises on their faces.
  • Sex:

To signal the next round, girls in tight and skimpy outfits briefly parade around the ring.
  • Language:

The worst words used were "sh-t" and "ass."
  • Consumerism:

Sponsor logos cover the ring, while players can add logos to their shorts for credibility bonuses. Almost all the sponsors are affiliated with UFC, including Tapout Xyience.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

In dialogue, characters can be heard making references to drinking, to bars, or to people being drunk.

What Parents Need to Know

This review of UFC 2009 Undisputed was written by Brett Molina

Parents need to know this is a sports simulation based on the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Players use a series of punches, kicks and grapples to knock out opponents or make them give up. These can range from flying knees to the face to chokeholds. Blood sometimes shoots out after strikes, while fighters show signs of injury such as cuts to the face. In between fights, ring girls wearing skimpy outfits briefly parade around the ring to signal the next round. The game is playable online, a feature Common Sense Media does not recommend to children under the age of 12.

What’s the Story?

After a five-year hiatus, mixed-martial arts returns to video games with the release of UFC 2009 UNDISPUTED, a robust and rousing simulation of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The goal of each match, fought in an octagon-shaped ring, is to defeat your opponent by either knocking him out or forcing him to give up. Each fighter employs a series of fighting styles ranging from boxing and wrestling to judo and ju-jitsu to achieve victory. The game has a 30-minute tutorial that shows the basics of Ultimate Fighting.

Players can either control famous fighters such as Chuck Liddell and Rampage Jackson in exhibition and online fights, or create a fighter and move him through Career Mode. Like boxing, fighters break down into different weight classes such as lightweight, middleweight, and heavyweight. In between brawls, players assign training times and sparring sessions to prepare for battle.

Is It Any Good?

UFC sports an impressive level of depth. Players can customize their fighters' looks, style, and outfits, down to even the color of their mouthpiece. There is plenty to learn in order to master the fighting, from simple strikes to takedowns and grapples. Fortunately, the game is still easy to pick up and play, as players can easily mash buttons to deliver flurries of punches and kicks. The fighters look realistic, closely mirroring their real-life counterparts.

Fights are intense and unpredictable. If you let your guard down for a second, opponents can unleash a powerful punch to knock you out cold. Attacks also look painful, based on the grimaces and other expressions from opponents on the receiving end. With practice, you will learn how to deliver that crucial punch that puts opponents on the mat. Overall, UFC provides an exciting alternative for gamers tired of the standard boxing and wrestling games.
