What parents need to know

Parents need to know that World of Outlaws: Spirit Cars is based entirely around the sprint car racing series, and likely will appeal to a very limited audience. Players can adjust their vehicle settings prior to any race, and will then sprint and nudge their way to the front of the pack of cars in a given race. Crashes occur and video footage of real world fiery crashes are shown. The game is full of product placement and some sexist references. Gamers with limited knowledge of the subtleties of car acceleration and braking, especially on dirt tracks will have a difficult time controlling and enjoying the game. The game can be played using headsets and open chat online, so parents need to consider the possibility of kids hearing offensive language from other players. Common Sense Media does not recommend letting kids talk online with strangers.

Educational value: Not applicable.
Positive messages: There really isn’t much of a message in this game, perhaps one can take away the willingness to continue trying to succeed if  failure happens. But the negative connotations of sexism and consumerism quell that positive into a negative overall. A fair amount of innuendo is present in the title. One challenge is called the “Sugar Momma Shootout” and other sexist allusions are present throughout the game.
Positive role models: The desire to succeed regardless of previous outcomes is the main role of the gamer in this title.
Ease of play: The racing controls can be tough to learn for gamers who aren’t familiar with the physics of driving a car on a dirt road. Races are over very generic courses, but some can be fairly lengthy (10 minutes at a time). Most courses have players simply turning in one direction the entire time. This doesn’t, however, make the game simple to play.
Violence & scariness: No human on human violence but car racing can be a violent sport. Lots of crashes, bumping, and jostling for position happen in the game. Some cut scenes show actual real world footage of crashes, including cars bursting into flames. This may be a little intense for the younger gamers.
Language: Not applicable.
Consumerism: The game is one giant advertisement. Even the game case features advertisements for at least four national brands. This continues throughout the game as you unlock access to sponsors, and sponsored races.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
  • Parents can talk about the very prevalent role of advertising in sports, such as vehicle racing, and how that guides people to support certain products.

  • They can also discuss playing videogames and interacting with strange people online.

What's the story?

What's the story?

WORLD OF OUTLAWS: SPRINT CARS is a simulation game based entirely on the Sprint Car racing series of the same name. Players enter a sequence of races where you must complete training laps and qualifying races to get to the main event. Players are able to tweak their vehicle for optimal performance before each race, providing the player has some knowledge of adjustments and their results. Online play has some modes other than racing such as 'bomb tag', but players will mostly be in it for the races.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

From the onset, the game definitely shows its budget pricing in the presentation; a very bare bones interface combined with very flat and boxy looking graphics keep this title destined for the bargain bin. With controls that seem to never allow the player to fully control the car, only the dedicated and patient will be able to master the game. Actual drivers from the World of Outlaws series are used as opponents in the title, but sadly, nothing more than car number, style, and the drivers name are presented. The races start out interesting with mud flying (and blocking your vision), but after the first few matches, you realize that each race is going to be identical. Only the most hardened Sprint Car fans will stick this game out. Playing online has potential to be fun, but the extremely limited online community makes finding people to play with difficult.

Online interaction: Open chat is available for all gamers, and with that anyone runs the risk of ending up in a lobby or game with a very offensive player.

cars... Kyle
I think this is appropriate for 8+ because my son, Kyle, loves to see and ride cars.

The right step in the right derection!
Well I have been around racing my whole life and most people relate race fans as white trash, all types of people like racing and all kinds of people like football. They are both sports and fun to watch and these guys who participate in these sports are inspirational to some, but most of all its better than first person shooter game's that can make some forget reality. I would just like to say thanks for the game.
