What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Age of Zombies Anniversary is a time-traveling zombie shoot 'em up that features constant violence and some questionable language. Players shoot an array of weapons at waves of zombies, mummies, and more, with cartoon blood appearing on screen when they're killed. The game also features an in-app purchase opportunity to unlock all of the game's levels. Users can share high scores via the Game Center social network, but participation is optional.

    The controls follow the fairly standard twin thumbstick design and work fairly well, but the waves of zombies are often overwhelming. 
  • Violence3
    The game is a nonstop symphony of violence. You kill zombies, which come in ever-increasing waves using a pistol, shotgun, submachine guns, grenades, and more. When enemies are killed, they leave a cartoonish blood splatter, which fades. 
  • Sex0
    Not applicable.
  • Language3
    Hero Barry Steakfries uses words like "badass" along with questionable phrases like "Holy balls!" and "crapped my pants."
  • Consumerism4
    Other games from the developer are prominently featured on the main menu. Users can also unlock all levels of the game with a 99-cent in-app purchase. 
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking1
    The game makes mention of "Big Jimmy Bob's Ultimate Beer and Burger Bar."
  • Privacy & safety3
    Some privacy concerns. Users can opt in to OpenFeint, an interactive network that allows users to upload real avatar photos, post on message boards, connect with Facebook friends or Twitter followers, and access live chat with strangers. Users can opt in to Game Center to track achievements instead; it does not have chat and connections to other social media within the app.

Is it any good?

 

Barry Steakfries is one of those heroes you feel you should be rooting for, but you don't always succeed. He tries hard to come up with one-liners in this time-traveling shooter, but they're really not that funny, and the game ultimately feels somewhat paint by numbers: Get the weapon drop, kills lots of monsters, run to get breathing room, repeat. This edition is a nice visual improvement on its earlier version, and the game has a vocal fan base, but it's clear to newcomers that developer Halfbrick was just figuring out to do with the character in this early appearance. (Thankfully, they made him mute and more likable in later games.)
