What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Amazing Breaker is one of the many "aim and shoot" games that have become popular since Angry Birds. This game, however, has many more options and interesting elements of play than Angry Birds -- but it's also a little scarier and more violent. Different images of a wide variety of things -- from roses to houses and jack-o-lanterns -- appear on the screen; players aim "bombs" and blast away at them until they're at least 90 percent gone to move onto the next level. While the differing actions of the four bombs are unique and engaging (Spike: aim and shoot; Ghost: rub screen to control; Helicopter: tap to deploy crystals; Split: splits into three crystals), the bombs are pretty realistic and the images, sounds, and background music can be sort of surreal and spooky.

  • "Easy to learn but hard to master" is this game's motto. Four different types of bombs are used. Once players get the hang of how each one works, it's intuitive to know how to play all 80-plus levels, even though the difficulty increases with each level.
  • The bomb explosions look very realistic, with lots of red fire, black smoke, noise, and destruction when players hit the intended target. The app doesn't have blood or living targets or anything like that, but there's still enough realism that it may be too intense or violent enough to be scary for younger players.

  • There's a "More Games" tab on the app's main page, as well as links to the developer's Twitter and Facebook pages.
  • Some privacy and safety concerns. This app can be used with Game Center and Open Feint. OpenFeint is an interactive network that allows users to upload real avatar photos, post on message boards, connect with Facebook friends or Twitter followers and access live chat with strangers. Users can opt into Apple's Game Center instead; it does not have chat and connections to other social media within the app. Game Center tracks scores and achievements, and for some games, players can challenge friends, send and receive friend requests using an email address or Game Center nickname, revealing the first and last name associated with each party's Apple ID and, in the case of email requests, the sender's email. With iOS 5, players can opt to have a private or public profile, which can include a photo. With a public profile, your real name is visible to all other players, and Game Center will recommend you to other players using your real name. With a private profile, only your friends can see your real name, and Game Center will not recommend you to other players.

Is it any good?

Depending upon the age of the player and their interest in aim and shoot-style games, AMAZING BREAKER could be a huge hit or, quite literally, a scary bomb. The explosions that happen when players hit the targets correctly with the bombs are really realistic in both appearance and sound. Some of the targets, such as a ghost and a jack-o-lantern, are spooky enough that some younger players may shy away from the game for those images alone. But for older players or kids who aren't spooked easily, the 80 levels of play and the unique actions of the four bombs will likely be addictive fun, much more so than most Angry Birds-like games.
