What parents need to know

Parents need to know that A Field Guide to North American Birds lets kids cart around an encyclopedia's worth of reference material in one handy app. It also provides a means for kids to record bird sightings in a virtual notebook. There's a lot of information, but it's not presented in an intimidating way. Kids can even search for birds visually by identifying things like color, size, body shape, and wingspan. Our review is based on the iPhone app; the Android app may have some differences in functionality.

  • The app is easy to navigate. Kids should have fun browsing the color photographs, listening to the bird calls, and clicking on colors and body/wing shapes to identify the birds visually.

Is it any good?

The Audubon Society's A FIELD GUIDE TO NORTH AMERICAN BIRDS is an invaluable, exhaustive resource for bird watchers. You'll find everything you need in order to learn about, identify and record sightings of more than 750 species of native birds -- including a detailed interactive search feature, audio clips of recorded bird calls, and thousands of stunning photographs. Best of all, there's no Internet connection required to access any of it. It's pricey, so it's not an app for the dabbler, but serious birders will appreciate its thoroughness.

the best of the available birding apps
I own and use Audubon, iBird Pro, and Sibley's apps. Each has its strengths but speaking objectively, Audubon's birding app is the best-looking, the most informative, and my favorite to use.
