What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Big Kid Life Firefighter is exciting action for wannabe future firefighters. There are also some educational mini-games throughout the app for young kids. As one of a series of similarly crafted apps by developer Fingerprint, this is probably the most intense role-play game for pre-K and kindergarten app users in this series because of the real nature of being a firefighter: There are angry-looking flames and smoke, ladders, stranded kittens and puppies, and the chance of getting "burned" (which, in this game, means turning red). Parents have the option of signing up for free features that allow them to get messages via Facebook or email about what their kids are playing, as well as sending and receiving messages with their kid via the app.

  • Easy to play, although there are fewer voice prompts on certain areas of this app than one might expect, considering the suggested age range includes pre-readers. Some kids may get stuck on certain screens not knowing what to do and have to just use trial-and-error. Recording messages to parents is a little difficult at first if kids don't understand the very limited instruction. They must touch the button icon, release, speak the message, and then press it again to send.
  • Some very young kids may find the mean-faced fireballs on this app scary. If a firefighter runs into smoke or flames, he turns red as if burnt.

  • The logo for Fingerprint is on the app's main intro screen, as well as on the screen that prompts kids to send a message to their parent. An "FP" icon on some screens will, when tapped, move kids to a Fingerprint page that tells them about new games from the developer. If kids tap on the new game, another screen pops up and a verbal prompt says, "Tap here if you want to tell your mom that you want this game." Then a message is sent to the parent.
  • Minor concerns. Parents can opt to exchange personal messages back and forth with their kid through a service called "Mom-Comm," but they must use Facebook or an email account to do so. You don't have to sign up for Mom-Comm for kids to play the app; instead you can sign in as a guest user for app gameplay only.

Is it any good?

BIG KID LIFE FIRE FIGHTER is probably the most intense role-play app in this series of apps created for young kids to try out different adult roles, so if your kid is extra sensitive, this app's fires and stranded pets may be a little too much. For kids who are into the action, the app offers a lot of fast challenge and basic learning practice. The educational games that are interspersed with the more arcade-style firefighting game are solid learning practice in basic shapes, numbers, colors, and more. Kids can also send messages to their parents if Mom or Dad sign up for that free option. Overall, an adventurous learning game for wannabe heroes.
