What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Britannica Kids: Volcanoes is packed with all kinds of multimedia content designed to teach users about volcanoes. Standard encyclopedia articles are presented alongside pictures, videos, and mini-games that help ensure users understand the material presented. The interactive nature also makes the process of learning fun and interesting.

  • This app features a very well created user interface, allowing users to easily toggle between all the different types of content -- pictures, videos, encyclopedia articles, mini-games, etc. The interactive parts of the app, like mini-games, are also designed for a casual audience and are accessible young users.

  • The app advertises other entries in the Britannica Kids app series, which are available to purchase from the App Store. The "Shop" section is sandwiched between the games and other features on an option wheel on all of the main pages of the app.
  • Some privacy concerns. Kids can share aspects of the app via email, Facebook, and Twitter.

Is it any good?

BRITANNICA KIDS: VOLCANOES is designed for children in elementary and middle school, though the compilation of volcano pictures and videos would dazzle users of all ages. The mini-games are very rudimentary and should not be used as an incentive to buy the app, but the vast array of other content in this interactive encyclopedia is more than enough to make it a worthwhile purchase.
