What parents need to know

Parents need to know that the Cars 2 Storybook Deluxe is an interactive, read-along book app that tells a simplified version of the Cars 2 movie plot. In it, Mater becomes accidentally recruited as a spy to help stop the plot of a villain bent on global domination. The book glosses over the violence in the film, showing only one car shooting a missile, and doesn't show any cars getting hurt. The app also features games, puzzles, and coloring pages. Be aware that one section of the app asks if you want to join a mailing list.

  • The app is very simple to use, even for younger kids -- both the storybook and the games.
  • Some illustrations show cars in danger (such as tied to the gears of a giant machine), and one scene shows Finn McMissile shooting a missile from his headlight at the bad lemon cars following him.

  • The book tells the story of the Cars 2 movie. The app features ads for other Disney book apps. It also lets you enter an email address to receive emails from Disney.
  • Minor privacy concerns: One area of the app asks for an email address; this will place you on a Disney mailing list.

Is it any good?

The CARS 2 STORYBOOK DELUXE app offers a nice way for younger kids to get the story of the Cars 2 film sans most of the guns and bombs. Of course, reading the book may just make them want to see the movie. This book app, though, is quite good, both in its function as an interactive book (there are some fun animations and gravity tricks) and its bonus games, which include a Simon-Says-style memory game and a physics-based tire toss game, in addition to jigsaw puzzles and coloring pages.
