Parents need to know that Castlevania Puzzle: Encore of the Night is a re-working of the classic console game Castlevania: Symphony of the Night as a puzzle game with heavy role-playing elements. Players control the mysterious Alucard, the half-human son of Dracula, as he explores his evil father's castle to try to stop him from rising once again. The story, graphics, and wonderful soundtrack of the original game are intact, but enemies are defeated by playing falling-block puzzles. When the main character is defeated, he falls backwards in a gush of pixelated-looking blood.
The original Symphony of the Night is widely regarded as a classic, and CASTLEVANIA PUZZLE: ENCORE OF THE NIGHT holds its own thanks largely to the elements that it borrows from the original. The game is huge, with branching paths to explore and dozens of items, equipment, spells, and minions to discover. Detailed maps, teleport rooms, an autosave feature, and the ability to travel to a safe room at any time even get rid of some of the backtracking found in Symphony of the Night. The puzzle gameplay, which relies heavily on chaining combos together and planning several moves ahead, isn't as straightforward as the likes of Puzzle Quest, but it's worth pushing through it as a means of experiencing the whole adventure.
