What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Civilization Revolution allows players to control one of history's great powers (Cleopatra's Egypt, Napoleon's France, Lincoln's America, etc.) from ancient times all the way into the space age. Along the way, they will build monuments, found cities, research new sciences, and wage wars. The violence is depicted in a non-graphic way, but it is there. There's a lot to keep track of and a lot to learn, making the game a difficult one for younger kids to play.

  • A more in-depth tutorial would be helpful, but the controls and rules -- once you figure them out -- are not too hard to handle. There's a lot to keep track of, though, which may make the game too difficult for younger kids. The size of the iPhone/iPod screen makes scrolling around across a huge global map a bit of a chore, and it's easy to miss something going on in a far corner of this virtual world.
  • Battles are waged and soldiers will die, but these fights are depicted by little warriors waving swords or firing guns, and they simply disappear when dead.
  • In illustrations, some of the female leaders show cleavage.
  • Not applicable.

Is it any good?

The CIVILIZATION REVOLUTION iPhone app (there's a different one for iPad) is less graphically spectacular than the console version of the same game, but it's still an incredibly deep and immersive experience in which you can conquer the world via war, technology, or culture. The iPhone's small screen makes it a bit more difficult to keep track of a global empire, but this isn't a quick pick-up-and-play game to begin with. Approach it with the right amount of patience and focus and you'll get the full historical simulation experience. Civilization Revolution is such a big game that it's a difficult one to translate into a mobile app, but the job was done remarkably well.

Extremly sharp game, a mixed bag.
I am not a huge fan for Civilization games. They seem extremely slow and not fun. This app was free for awhile and it was fair. But the highest it should ever sell for is 2 dollars.
