What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Clay Jam is an action game where players attempt to aid residents of a Claymation world. There's some violence, but it's cartoonish and very minimal. (Players knock "bully beasts" as far as possible at the end of each level by rolling a ball at them, but not in a malicious manner.) There are in-app purchases, but they're not aggressively pushed on players and not necessary to enjoy the game.

  • Directing the clay is very intuitive, done with finger swipes, and the game eases players into the experience.
  • Minimal violence. When your ball hits an obstacle, stars appear. And when you hit a Bully Beast, it flies through the air, but no harm is shown.

What kids can learn

1

Clay Jam wasn't created with educational intent, and we don't recommend it for learning.

What's it about?

Players attempt to save a world by rolling a ball down a clay mountain, squashing small creatures to grow in size and bounce enemy "bully beasts" as far as possible. They control the direction of the ball by "carving" a path in the clay with their fingers, which the ball follows. Bully beasts can only be ultimately defeated by finishing a number of tasks, such as roll down the hill without touching anything or squashing six of a certain creature in a row. After each level, players collect clay, which can be used to create other creatures they can squash on the hill and unlock other hills.

Is it any good?

Clay Jam is quirky, fun, and adorable. The Claymation effects of the game are outstanding, and the gameplay is simple but addictive. Everything feels right about the movement, and the sounds are spot on -- squishy and often goofy fun.

Is the game simplistic? Maybe, but there's a complexity behind its basic controls that will bring you back time and again. And kids will love playing in a real-life cartoon setting. It's an app that will thrill and amuse you and your kids -- and you can't ask for more than that.
