What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Counting Caterpillar is a charming way for kids who are just learning to count to 100 or count by 2s, 5s, and 10s to practice those skills. Players drop cute flying number bugs into a climbing caterpillar's mouth and collect unique butterflies. There are 45 levels and enough options to customize this app to your child's current learning level without being overwhelming.

  • Once kids get the handle of dropping the numbers into the caterpillar's mouth, it's very easy to play. There are options to turn music and hints off and set level of play.

What kids can learn

4

Kids can learn counting by 1s to 100, and skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s with Counting Caterpillar. Kids catch aphids to feed the caterpillar and fill its body segments with numbers, earning a different butterfly reward for each level. As a science lesson aside on this math app, young kids experience the concept of a caterpillar slowly turning into a butterfly with beautiful graphics. Young kids playing Counting Caterpillar get a simple, smart, solid foundation in basic numbers counting.

What's it about?

The cute creature in Counting Caterpillar is hungry, and your kid needs to feed it aphids by dragging them in numerical order onto the caterpillar. Young kids can get hints by color if needed. The app rewards kids with a beautiful butterfly for each of the 45 levels completed. Counting Caterpillar is definitely for beginning counters, but can get more complicated for kids who can remember numbers in random placements.

Is it any good?

COUNTING CATERPILLAR is well worth the $1.99 price. As the caterpillar transforms into a butterfly by eating the numbers that players feed it in correct order, the kids themselves are being transformed into numbers masters, ready to take flight into the next levels of math with counting confidence. The butterfly graphics are quite captivating, and a nice change of pace from the average math app.

How kids will learn

Kids learn visually by viewing the numbers shown on the screen, as well as by choosing the right numbers and counting the segments of the caterpillar building as kids complete each level. Learning is also reinforced verbally, as numbers are spoken. More difficult levels challenge kids to use the numbers they've memorized by that point to fill in random selections. Fun rewards help keep kids engaged as they learn math concepts.

How parents can help

  • Help your kid practice skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s in the car or other times when time allows for repetition.
  • Use nickel and dimes to practice counting money while skip counting.
