What parents need to know

Parents need to know that DigitZ is a Tetris-style block elimination game that revolves entirely around arithmetic. On each level, you'll have a different target number. As numbered blocks drop down, you need to tap ones that add up to the target. You can tap as many as you need to in order to get there. There are many different ways to make the game either easier or more challenging, so players of various ages can all enjoy it.

  • The game is very easy to use, and there are three difficulty levels -- each with multiple speeds -- so the game can be tailored for almost any age.

What kids can learn

3

Kids can learn to recall and quickly calculate math facts as they work to eliminate the falling number blocks in DigitZ. Because each level has only one target number, kids repeatedly calculate the same problems, which can help with math fluency. The more kids play, the more opportunity there is for math facts to transfer to long-term memory. For example, if the target number is 13, kids repeatedly look for the pairs 9/4, 8/5, and 7/6. DigitZ is an engaging game that offers kids effective and customizable arithmetic practice.

What's it about?

Players tap on falling number blocks that add up to equal the target number in the bottom right corner of the screen. When the combinations are correct, those blocks disappear from the board and players earn points. To advance to the next level, players must earn a specific number of points. Players lose if the blocks stack up to the top of the screen. Basic play options include difficulty (easy, medium, or hard) and level (1 to 10). Advanced options in the settings menu allow players to choose even more challenging game types and modes.

Is it any good?

DIGITZ is a great fast-paced game that will keep your brain and your fingers active. It's a fantastic learning tool in that as you play, you can't help but start to memorize different combinations of numbers that add up to desired totals. One of the best aspects of the app, though, is the high level of customization. There are three difficulty levels and 10 sub-levels in each of them. Plus, you can choose between two different game modes and three different scoring modes. You can also change the style of blocks to, say, dotted dice -- which adds a whole new challenge factor. With a few tweaks, kids and parents can each tailor the game to fit their skill levels.

How kids will learn

Kids learn through repetition as they look for number combinations that add up to the target number. The multiple modes and play options make the game accessible to players of varying abilities. Feedback within the app is limited, so kids who need to review their addition facts will have to look elsewhere for guidance. The app keeps track of high scores, which can motivate kids to keep playing.

How parents can help

  • Help your kids choose the difficulty mode and level to meet their learning needs. If the easy mode is too difficult for your kids, check out KidgitZ, a version for younger kids.
  • Watch as your kids play and make note of which equations are tricky for them. Review these problems with them or share this information with their teachers.
