What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Don't Let The Pigeon Run This App! is an interactive spin-off of the bestselling Pigeon book series by author/illustrator Mo Willems. In the app, kids can either listen to a brand new, randomly generated Pigeon story (so that it is different every time), or make choices to craft their own story. Younger kids can pick from multiple-choice options to add elements to the story, while older kids can choose to use their imagination and add whatever elements they can dream up (these are spoken into the microphone, and the child's voice will appear in the story). The app also contains a clear and easy lesson on how to draw Willems's famous Pigeon.

  • The app has three levels -- a straight story, a story with multiple-choice add-ins, and a story where kids make up their own additions -- so that it can be used by kids of various ages and skill levels. All three (and the art lesson feature) are clear in their instruction and easy to use.

Is it any good?

DON'T LET THE PIGEON RUN THIS APP! feels like the perfect way to go in adapting Mo Willems's Pigeon character for the app world. Rather than simply turn one of the Pigeon books into an app, the developers chose to let kids help craft their own Pigeon stories. It's wonderful that the app gives you the ability to either take the multiple-choice route or to let your imagination run free -- or just sit and watch a randomly generated story if you want. The animation and voice-acting (by Willems) are pretty great. And the bonus lesson on how to draw the Pigeon is remarkably good; you will really be able to draw that pigeon!

The Pigeon has my heart.
Every single person I've shown this too (from age 5 to 55) has smiled, laughed, and refused to give my iPad back... it was well worth the money I spent.

The best interactive app we've found.
This is a great interactive app that my 3 and 5 year old use over and over for months now, far more than any other app. We have 30+ apps and this is the winner. It has an excellent drawing tutor that is secondary to the main activity, but great on it's own. The main activity has levels of control for kids at different levels of task maturity. It makes great use of audio input and continues to have them in giggling fits.
