What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Dooors - room escape game - is a brain-teasing puzzle game in which players solve increasingly difficult puzzles to open a door and move on to the next level. The game can get so difficult, in fact, that young children will quickly lose interest. The app is free (and free of sex, violence, and language issues), but is ad-supported, meaning you will always have a banner ad onscreen as you (or your kids) play. The companies advertised vary from game to game.

  • While the first couple of puzzles are easy, the game ratchets up the difficulty quickly -- and offers no hints or tips, which could discourage players.

What kids can learn

2

Kids can learn to look beyond obvious solutions when faced with a problem in Dooors - room escape game-. The game is loaded with challenging puzzles and offers just one obscure hint per level. Players will have to figure out the meaning of that hint and then determine how it's relevant to proceed to the next level. Ultimately, solving the puzzles in Dooors requires more trial and error than logic.

What's it about?

Players will attempt to open doors by solving 35 different puzzles. In some cases, you'll need to find a hidden object (such as a doorknob) behind obstacles to open the door. In others, you'll need to correctly match lights to a pattern on or above the door. At different points, Dooors will test your problem-solving skills, observation skills, and reflexes.

Is it any good?

DOOORS is one of those games that was made for puzzle fans -- and it makes no bones about it. You're plopped in a room with no explanation and expected to figure out how to open the door in front of you using only the subtlest of hints. It weeds out non-puzzlers quickly with tough gameplay (though there are walkthroughs available online), but when you solve one of the later stages, there's a real sense of triumph.

The constant ads are an annoyance, though, that could easily be replaced with a premium version of the game. And fans who whip through the 35 levels quickly will be left wanting more.

How kids will learn

Kids who enjoy solving puzzles and are not easily frustrated are likely to find Dooors a fun title. They have free range to try any solution they can come up with -- without time limits or anything adding urgency to the situation. And if they are truly stumped, there are plenty of walk-throughs available online. While the feedback in the app is minimal, being able to solve these puzzles and open the doors will give players a sense of satisfaction.

How parents can help

  • Work with kids to solve the puzzles. They get hard fast -- and the game can easily be a team effort.
  • When kids face a dilemma in real life, ask them to think of various ways to resolve it -- with an eye on the long-term consequences.

Great if you are motivated by a good challenge
Very good app if you are in to puzzles. You have to be a thinker to progress through the different levels.
