What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Drawn: Dark Flight HD is a classic adventure game and a stand-alone sequel for the original Drawn: The Painted Tower. It is free to download; players unlock the full game with a $9.99 in-app purchase. Like the original, it can be a little dark and scary for younger kids, as the player explores the tunnels and the towns. Kids will follow the story and solve mysteries to rescue Princess Iris, lighting the Beacons of the town to dispel the darkness that envelops it.

  • The controls are simple taps on the screen, with some sliding actions. Instructions are short and simple, and puzzles, while challenging, can be skipped to continue the story.
  • There's no real violence, but the app can be a little dark and scary for younger kids, as the player explores the tunnels and the towns.

  • The app is free to download, but only the first chapter is unlocked. Players can unlock the full game with a $9.99 in-app purchase. The app also includes links to other apps from the publisher.
  • Some privacy concerns. Players are invited to go to the Big Fish forums to share their thoughts at the end of the game (some players will visit the forum to find cheat codes); no registration is required. Also, players can opt in to Apple’s Game Center to track scores and achievements, and for some games, challenge friends. Players can send and receive friend requests using an email address or Game Center nickname, revealing the first and last name associated with each party’s Apple ID and, in the case of email requests, the sender’s email address. With iOS 5, players can opt to have a private or public profile, which can include a photo. With a public profile, your real name is visible to all other players, and Game Center will recommend you to other players using your real name. With a private profile, only your friends can see your real name, and Game Center will not recommend you to other players.

Is it any good?

DRAWN: DARK FLIGHT HD is a classic adventure mystery in which kids move from scene to scene, picking up objects, discovering secrets that will unlock the puzzle, and entering fabulously rendered magical books and paintings. Accompanied by evocative instrumental music and voice narration, players work to solve the mystery and rescue Iris, who escaped the evil pursuing her by hiding in a book.

The app’s objectives will lead kids through the story, with helpful hints as needed; the harder puzzles can be skipped. The individual puzzles can't be replayed but kids can play the story through as many times as they wish, and more than one player profile can be set to allow each player to go through the story at their own pace. The stunning visuals, challenging puzzles, and underlying message of the story make this app -- though pricey -- a keeper.
