What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this virtual dress-up game plays like the electronic equivalent of paper dolls. Players choose a model (who appears to be a teen or young woman), customize her skin, hair, makeup, etc., then dress her, piece by piece in any number of outfits. If there's a Facebook account attached to the mobile device, kids can post their creations to it. Parents should be aware that though this app is in the Education section on iTunes, there is no educational content.

  • Kids will have no difficulty using the app to create customized outfits and looks for their virtual models.
  • Not applicable.
  • Some of the outfits aren't exactly demure. You'll find ripped jeans, bare-midriff tops, and bikinis among the clothing here.

Is it any good?

DRESS UP AND MAKEUP is a generally fun and easy-to-use virtual doll app. There are plenty of customization items, even beyond the many clothing pieces, including hats, sunglasses, bags, and fun stuff like surfboards, roller skates, and guitars. There have been several upgrades to the app, adding more content, and it can be assumed that there will be more to come. One small quibble: While you can choose from a variety of skin tones and hair styles for your model, her facial features are unchangeable.
