What parents need to know

Parents need to know that eBoy FixPix is a unique puzzle game with pictures that are broken into pieces; some of the images are not especially kid-friendly. The images used for the game are pixelated artwork (primarily cartoon
art) and include things like weapons, a man hanging from a noose, and
cartoonish nudity. Gameplay involves tilting your device until the pieces of the picture align. It's not always as straightforward as that sounds, as the pictures are often broken up by separating the background from the foreground. The puzzle is not about the tilting so much as it is about figuring out where the pieces are supposed to go. And, although some of the puzzles are simple to solve, some of them are very tricky. The game does allow you to skip a puzzle that is causing you grief and return to it later. There is no timer, scoring, or anything else you'd expect from a game app. It's just about solving the puzzles at your own pace.

  • This app is highly intuitive, but there are some levels that are fiendish to complete. Beyond the first few levels, there is no noticeable ramping up of difficulty. Some levels are just trickier than others and a lot of it has to do with your approach to solving them.
  • The app contains images with guns, blood, and cartoon violence.
  • The app contains images with suggestive content, including scantily clad women, cleavage, a nude man without genitals, and a bare-breasted female mythical creature.
  • The app contains "gateway" language like "hell."
  • The info page contains a link to the publisher's website where additional apps may be purchased. Puzzles contain identifiable commercial images such as golden arches.
  • Some of the app's 175 images contain scenes in bars with drinking involved.
  • Minor privacy issues. Users can share solved puzzles via Facebook, and the app includes a link to email the publisher. Both are optional.

Is it any good?

EBOY FIXPIX is a basic, yet surprisingly engaging puzzle app. There aren't any extras, trophies, or even help, but the challenge is there for fans of puzzles. There are 175 visual puzzles with varying degrees of difficulty and it's the type of app you can pick up, play for a few minutes, and put away. If a puzzle is too frustrating, skip it and come back to it later. Although you can reset the puzzles, it's not the type of game you'll play over and over. Still, for the $.99 price at the time of this review, it's worth the ride while it lasts. Mature content keeps it from being kid-friendly, but teens and adults will enjoy the attention to detail in many of the puzzle scenes.
