What's It About?

Kids choose the "123" tab for counting activities or the "+-x" tab to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. In the counting section, there's an interactive counting book, two practice activities, and four counting games. For arithmetic practice, kids choose an operation (+, -, x, or /) and a range of numbers. They can also play a timed game, answering problems to earn Epicoins, the in-app currency. Kids earn achievements in the arithmetic games for various accomplishments like getting five correct answers in a row.

EPIC MATH is a fun way for kids to practice counting and basic arithmetic, but it has some weaknesses. Without audio support for pre-readers, the counting activities might be confusing. The arithmetic games are simple and a good way to reinforce math skills; however, when kids enter a correct answer, the number never displays -- the app jumps right to the next problem. Displaying the correct answer even briefly would help reinforce learning.

To its credit, the app does engage kids in counting and math practice. Parents can boost learning by guiding young kids in the counting activities and helping older kids set up customized practice in the arithmetic activities. And the "Toy Store" provides motivation for kids to play longer in order to earn Epicoins, which they can use to purchase just-for-fun mini-games and new backgrounds.

  • Provide assistance for your kids when they play Epic Math; young kids will need reinforcement during the counting activities, and older kids might need help figuring out the customization options.
