What parents need to know

Parents need to know that as brutal as Face Fighter is when using its pre-made characters, the overall experience can be more disturbing when using custom-created fighters as opponents. Kids can upload a friend, teacher, or family member's face to the game and then watch themselves beat that person black-and-blue. You don't need to play this way, but the option is available and promoted within the app.

  • Fighting is not very difficult at all, though you can raise the difficulty level to make it more challenging.
  • With fists and feet, players beat opponents to a pulp. Opponents have photo-realistic faces -- and can be photos of friends or family members -- and as players hit them, they develop broken noses, fat lips, black eyes, bruises, and other types of physical damage. Power-ups allow players to beat opponents with things like a guitar, a chicken, or a high-heeled shoe. Scoring a "fatality" may cause a boulder to smash opponents, crush them between two spiked walls, or allow a shark eat them.

Is it any good?

Technologically, FACE FIGHTER is impressive. The way it allows you to place, say, your brother's face onto your virtual opponent -- and then alters your brothers face by, say, knocking loose teeth, fattening a lip, breaking a nose, and blacking an eye -- is a definite feat of programming prowess. It's also kind of creepy, though. Putting that questionably feature aside, Face Fighter is a standard first-person boxing-type game with ugly characters made uglier over the course of the fight. There's a novelty to it at first, but that wears off after a few bouts.
