What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed is a storybook version of the classic children's song. The story doesn't deviate from the song, but adds well-done illustrations and humor to the story without taking too many liberties. Users can have the story read to them via a narrated version, can read it themselves, or have the book read and pages turned automatically (essentially a movie-like presentation of the book). Words are highlighted as the narrator reads them, and children can touch anything on screen and have it identified. The app does aggressively promote other books, however, which could run up the bill for parents.

  • Pages are turned with a swipe of the finger. One mode lets kids read out loud, and if they need additional help they can touch a paragraph to hear it read out loud. There's also a fully automatic mode where kids can watch and listen to the entire book being read to them.
  • When the monkeys fall from the bed, they land hard and cry; later they are shown with head bandages and ice packs.

  • If the News setting is turned on, advertising for other apps from the publisher can show up in the corner of the main screen. Even with the News setting off, there are buttons that lead to links to the App Store and the publisher's website. Beyond that, the app is a promotional vehicle for a series of children's books starring the five little monkeys.

Is it any good?

While it might be a little jarring to hear Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed presented as a story rather than a song, Oceanhouse Media (and author/illustrator Eileen Christelow) pulls it off. Children will love seeing the song presented with quality artwork and the pages pan and zoom to help bring the story to life. The app also is a good learning tool, offering a variety of ways for users to experience it and utilizing picture/word association to help teach children (words zoom and are spoken when an item is touched onscreen). The story's simplistic, and older kids might get bored quickly, but young children will be captivated.
