What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Geo Walk HD - 3D World Fact Book is an educational app loaded with useful information about 500 people, places, plants, and animals. The information is presented in two stylish interfaces in easily digestible but fact-loaded bites. (No description is more than a paragraph long, so kids will be less likely to find it too daunting and skip past it.) Every data point has a vivid picture to help bring it to life. A separate but identical version of the app called Geo Walk - 3D World Fact Book is also available for the iPhone and iPod touch.

  • Data points are located on a spinning globe, which is very intuitive. Or, should users prefer, they can view them in a series of flipping cards. Controls at the bottom let users navigate to quizzes or exclude categories they're not interested in exploring.

What's it about?

Players spin an interactive globe that's covered with small thumbnail pictures (which turn out to be flash cards). When they tap one, they'll see an image indicating of one of the game's four categories -- animals and plants, history, people, and inventions. Tap the picture and a short information paragraph gives details in digestible form. Players can turn off categories and take a quiz to see how much of the information they're retaining.

Is it any good?

In an era where expertly researched encyclopedias are nearly extinct and crowd-sourced ones often contain faulty data, Geo Walk HD - 3D World Fact Book is a breath of fresh air. Loaded with information in easily digestible nuggets, the app makes learning truly fun. And a quiz mode helps owners review what they've learned (or test their existing knowledge) in an entertaining fashion. Rather than focusing on space or theoretical concepts, the app sticks to the real world but finds plenty of unheard-of creatures that might as well be aliens -- like the Blobfish or Fishing Cat. This is, hands down, one of the best educational apps in the App Store.

How kids will learn

Geo Walk HD - 3D World Fact Book offers information in a form so digestible that it's like educational potato chips. Kids will snack on the information but never feel overly full. By presenting data in small chunks, the app never gets tedious, so kids will be more willing to explore further. The data is also presented in a fun way that encourages exploration and views of all corners of the world. The quizzes in the app aren't overly difficult if you've read the information, which kids should find encouraging.

How parents can help

  • Explore the app with kids to learn about fields you're both interested in.
  • Use the small information summaries as launching pads to learn more about the topics. This can be everything from the effects of a person's influence in the world to a broader Internet search on a topic you're both unfamiliar with but find intriguing.
