What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this is a review of the $.99 Giraffe's Matching Zoo Deluxe for iPad and not the free version, which is just one screen of matching animals. On the paid version there are five levels of play and a "fun" button that unlocks sound and visual effects every two successful matches. Most of the effects are silly fun, like cars racing across the screen, but one sound effect is of passing gas -- as a warning to parents with kids currently obsessed with potty humor. The game is very easy to navigate.

  • When you open the app it shouts "here we go!" and kids are off and matching. A button up top changes levels. One below reshuffles the tiles. If kids hit the treasure box in the center they're told to match two first and a key will appear to a "fun" button with extra sound effects and other hoopla.

  • Occasionally the fun button unlocks the repeating sound of passing gas.

Is it any good?

GIRAFFE'S MATCHING ZOO DELUXE couldn't be easier to play. After the "here we go!" kids will be up and running. The animal noises bring on the silliness, yet are recognizable enough for the animals that do make noises -- no worries that they took liberties with the beeping starfish. It's worth paying a buck for the upgrade with extra levels and the "fun" button. After every two matches something sillier than the animal noises happens. And if you tap the "fun" button extra fast, even more cars/monkeys/etc. fly by or the sound effects get faster and faster. Kids will just enjoy the silliness and forget their memories are being tested, and they probably won't even look to see if they have a high score at the end of each game.
