What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Hamlet or the Last Game without MMORPG Features, Shaders and Product Placement is an offbeat adventure game that actually has very little to do with Shakespeare's famous play. Hamlet's plan for revenge against Claudius -- the usurper who killed his parents, stole the crown, and kidnapped his girlfriend -- is derailed when a time traveler's spaceship crash-lands right on top of him. With Hamlet down, players step in as the time-traveling hero to stop Claudius and rescue Ophelia. The game contains some cartoon violence, but no gore, and devilishly difficult puzzles. An HD version is also available for the iPad.

  • Hamlet's puzzles are creative but also extremely challenging, and they can't be skipped. The hints the game offers are often vague and not terribly helpful. Expect some frustrating moments, as well as a real sense of accomplishment when the solution finally "clicks."
  • Several instances of cartoon violence (no gore). Characters get hit on the head and see stars, zapped with lasers, and hit with bombs and rockets. One puzzle involves changing Hamlet's dream by firing cannon balls at his head when he's knocked out.
  • Ophelia's dress displays cleavage.
  • Not applicable.
  • A link on the main menu leads to a website with more games from the publisher. There's also a link to sign up for the publisher's newsletter. Players are prompted to leave a review in the app store.
  • Mostly private. Players can submit their name and email address to sign up for the publisher's newsletter; this is optional.

Is it any good?

HAMLET is an unorthodox take on Shakespeare's Hamlet with puzzles that include playing Rock, Paper, Scissors with a pirate monkey, battling a giant octopus, disabling Polonius' high-tech security system, and defeating an electric guitar-toting Claudius in a boss battle. Puzzles can be as simple as figuring out how to walk from one end of the room to the other by interacting with the environment, but they can be extremely challenging and border on the ridiculous at times. Hamlet is certainly a game that marches to the beat of its own drum, and as a result you'll be chuckling at its humor and creativity one minute and cursing some of its more inscrutable puzzles the next. Regardless, this off-kilter ode to one of Shakespeare's most famous plays is nothing if not creative and fresh.

Keep in mind just because I put 6+...
...Doesn't mean it's for every one. The game encourages lateral thinking, something that most children develop way later in life. If you want your child to get frustrated, by all means get this game. I rated it as such because there is no (explicit) violent or sexual content. It's very reminiscent of the old point-and-click adventure games of the 90s, and it's very addicting. The controls are simple enough, and the graphics are very vibrant. While it only lasts an hour or so (way more if you get constantly stuck), it's a fun experience. The hints should provide at least some guidance, but if you're very stuck Big Fish Games (the publisher of the PC version) has a walkthrough on their website. Keep in mind English majors that besides the title and characters, the game uses nothing from the original Shakespeare play (I mean, Orphelia gets kidnapped by her father. You don't even play as Hamlet, just a scientist that lands in the wrong situation).

It makes for some serious thought to get through the tricky puzzles. But the game isn't inappropriate (Even if the story is)
