What parents need to know

Parents need to know that HighFlyer Death Defyer (i4) is an action game based on skydiving, but blends several potentially fatal obstacles in with the death-defying plunges. The game has a fair level of violence once you get to the actual story (something that takes a lot longer than expected), but nothing is particularly gory. It's generous with achievements and rewards, but is still a bit much for young children. Users can share high scores via the Game Center social network, but participation is optional.

  • The controls on the game are poorly executed and extremely frustrating. It's very easy to get lost as you dive and to miss goals -- which ultimately means you fail the level and must restart.
  • Players will face several fatal obstacles, including turbines, lasers, and robotic monsters. The violence is not gory, though.

  • Players who wish to play as a female lead character will need to pay 99 cents via in-app purchase. Additional forthcoming worlds will also be in-app purchases, rather than free add-ons.
  • Minor privacy concerns. Players can opt in to Apple’s Game Center to track scores and achievements, and for some games, challenge friends. Players can send and receive friend requests using an email address or Game Center nickname, revealing the first and last name associated with each party’s Apple ID and, in the case of email requests, the sender’s email address. With iOS 5, players can opt to have a private or public profile, which can include a photo. With a public profile, your real name is visible to all other players, and Game Center will recommend you to other players using your real name. With a private profile, only your friends can see your real name, and Game Center will not recommend you to other players.

Is it any good?

Blending sky diving with action gaming sounds like a wonderful recipe for success, but HIGHFLYER DEATH DEFYER (I4) wastes that potential with an overbearing story, terrible controls, and poor pacing. The opening tutorials go on so long that it's easy to think they're the actual game -- before the story really kicks in with a comic book-style narrative and dangerous obstacles to avoid. It's the controls that really hurt the game, though. It's very easy to get lost as you dive and to miss goals -- which ultimately means you fail the level and must restart. And that quickly leads to frustration. The game has ambitious goals, but in the end it doesn't achieve any of them well.
