What parents need to know

Parents need to know that iLuv Drawing Animals - Learn to draw 40 animals is a great app for kids who want to learn how to draw or just enjoy drawing and coloring. The brief instructions are easy to understand: Just choose the animal you want to draw, trace over the dotted lines that appear on the screen, hit the next arrow for more lines, and when you're done with all the onscreen prompts color as you wish, choose a background, save to your in-app drawing book, or share your drawing. Since there are a number of sharing options, parents may want to review the rules with your kids about sharing personal information.

  • The cute little icons are pretty self-explanatory for kids. The app includes options for drawing, erasing, and even adding what you just erased, as well as to adding back the drawing lines to show how close you came to the suggested lines.

  • A "more apps" option on the main screen links to the publisher's website and other app in the iTunes App Store. There's also an icon with the Facebook logo with the option on every drawing to post on Facebook.
  • Some privacy concerns. Kids have the option to share their drawings via email to contacts, Facebook or email to the app's publisher, so parents may want to review personal information privacy and safety rules, as well as family rules for what should and shouldn't be shared publicly.

Is it any good?

I LUV DRAWING ANIMALS takes kids step-by-step through the drawing process, making it possible for even pre-K and kindergarten-age kids to try their hand at onscreen drawing and end up with some really good looking art. Narrowing the subject to animals is a helpful idea, giving kids some focus, and adding backgrounds is a nice touch, too. The ability to erase the entire drawing, or add back what you just erased is helpful for kids who get frustrated with mistakes, once they understand the range of options.
