What parents need to know

Parents need to know that iWriteWords is a nifty app that helps to teach kids how to write the letters of the alphabet, numbers up to 20, and simple words. Since the process of teaching kids to write uses a follow-the-numbered dots approach, it helps if kids already know how to count and read numbers up to 10 in order to play this game.

  • Once kids understand that the object of the game is to pull Mr. Crab through numbers in the right order, everything else falls into place. It would be nice for parents to be able to choose a specific word to practice, instead of having to go through the entire exercise again, but it's not a deal breaker.

Is it any good?

iWriteWords uses a kid favorite, connect-the-dots, to teach numbers and letters. Against brightly colored backgrounds, kids drag Mr. Crab through numbered dots in the right sequence, drawing letters at the same time. Each time kids complete a word, a cute drawing appears, the word is spoken, and other children cheer for you. Kids can then tilt the phone to make the letters tumble into a hungry vortex. Magical.

Great preschool app for learning to write letters.
My preschoolers like this app. It has helped both of them learn to write letters. It actually does a great job of teaching them where to start to form each section of the letter. And kids who are too young to physically hold a pencil properly can still learn their letters. Easy to play and gives a sense of satisfaction when they get it right.

good practice for writing and recognizing letters
my almost 4 year old figured this virtual chalk board (or slate) really quickly, and it not only engages him hands-on but is fun to practice...
