What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Jelly Defense is another entry in the crowded tower defense game genre that uses cute, jelly-based creatures as both its enemy soldiers and its weapons. The cartoon-like appearance of the game is potentially luring to children, especially young ones, but it's still a combat title at its core. There's no online gameplay, but users can share high scores via the Game Center social network, though participation is optional.

    A comprehensive tutorial level brings rookies to the tower defense genre up to speed quickly.

    You'll constantly fend off waves of attacking aliens with a variety of cartoon-like weapons, which shoot everything from lightning bolts to cannonballs out of their gelatinous bodies. There's no blood when enemy invaders perish, they simply are converted into coins (which are used to buy more weapons).

Is it any good?

 

JELLY DEFENSE is a perfectly serviceable entry in the tower defense genre, but it doesn't really add anything that other titles haven't already. The enemies and defenders are, admittedly, much cuter than in most other games of this ilk, but the gameplay is fairly basic: Waves of enemy troops come marching down the road and you attempt to stop them with a series of defensive weapons. The controls handle well, though, and the game's overall look is certainly eye-pleasing. It currently carries an introductory price of 99 cents, which is certainly fair, though we're not sure we'd pay more for the game and still feel as good about it.
