What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Loopt Mix - Chat! is essentially a user-organized and moderated dating service. Users create free profiles indicating age, gender, and sexual preference, then proceed to post status updates and pictures of themselves. The app indicates how far away other users are and allows people to make contact via live chats to facilitate meet-ups. This is clearly a service intended for adults, though some older teens appear to be using the service.

    This app should prove intuitive for most people. Creating an account, tapping out messages, and posting pictures mimic similar processes found in countless other apps.

LOOPT MIX - CHAT! is a fairly straightforward user-moderated dating app with a layer of social networking features. Users indicate their age and gender, upload photos of themselves and status updates, then begin looking through other users’ profiles based on sexual preference. The first results that pop up are users currently closest to you, often well under a mile. Exact locations are unspecified, but easy enough to find out by striking up chat within the app. Profiles with pictures of more attractive people tend to have more "fans," which encourages exhibitionism. Based on the profiles viewed while testing, this app is used primarily by people in their late teens and early twenties, and they generally seem to be legitimately interested in setting up romantic encounters with other users. This app is definitely not for kids.
