What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Madcoaster is a fast-paced rollercoaster-themed arcade game. Players bump animals out of the way to earn points, but there's no graphic violence. Certain power-ups and perks cost real money to unlock, but the game is perfectly enjoyable without doing so. Players can share high scores via the Crystal or Game Center social networks, but participation is optional.

  • The controls are standard for the genre, and are tight and responsive to the touch. Players are shown what to do through a brief tutorial at the beginning of the game. The action is fast-paced and requires good hand-eye coordination.
  • Players must intentionally bump into animals and birds to complete level goals and score points. Animals make noises of surprise and fall off the track when hit.

  • From the main menu, kids can follow links to visit the developer's Facebook page, rate the game in the app store, or expand a small window containing ads for other apps. Players can purchase certain upgrades and enhancements for small increments of real-world cash, but the game is perfectly enjoyable without them.
  • Some privacy concerns. Players can opt in to Crystal, an interactive network that allows users to upload real avatar photos; create a profile; add friends set location; post scores on leaderboards, Facebook, and Twitter; and post status messages. Users can opt in to Game Center to track achievements instead; it does not have connections to other social media within the app.

What's it about?

Players guide a rollercoaster full of screaming kids through a theme park, tapping and swiping the screen to jump at the right times, execute loops, and bounce between tracks. The goal is to earn points by gathering coins (which can be spent on power-ups and bonuses), knocking over animals, and covering as much ground as possible. Players gain levels by completing specific objectives, like collecting 50 big coins and bumping into 5 penguins. Tracks are randomly generated, and players must start over if they fall off the track too many times.

Is it any good?

Madcoaster isn't terribly innovative, but with good production values, spot-on controls, and tangible goals to aim for, it's a fast-paced dose of arcade fun that will appeal to kids craving a challenge. If there's a downside it's that some of the power-ups -- like the jetpack -- seem like afterthoughts and can actually break up the flow of the game rather than enhance it. Overall, however, Madcoaster is a great choice for fans of the "endless runner" style of arcade game.
