What parents need to know

Parents need to know that gamers need to have a (free) Game Center account in order to play MetalStorm: Online. Game Center is Apple's community-based online gaming hub with matchmaking and challenges, Top 10 game lists (showing what your friends are playing), global leaderboards and an Xbox Live-like achievement system. Though not graphic, the game involves violence, as you shoot to destroy enemy aircraft. Some might feel this game trivializes the work of the U.S. military. Parents should also know this game is free but to unlock all the goodies there's an in-app purchase option. Players can also talk with strangers while playing this online game; an option lets you voice chat with the person you're playing with, and there is no one monitoring the conversation. During our review of the app, we couldn't find any other players who had activated the voice chat feature.

  • Using the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch's built-in sensors, the aircraft in the game are fairly easy to maneuver as you tilt the device side to side. Buttons on each side of the screen are used for firing weapons, accelerating, and so on.
  • While not graphic, the game's primary objective is to shoot weapons at enemy aircraft to blow them up -- before they can do the same to you.

  • Not applicable.
  • The game is free but players can spend real money on in-app purchases. On the iPhone, ads appear on the menu screen.
  • The app requires a Game Center account to play, which requires an email address. Game Center accounts also allow users to track scores and achievements. With Game Center, players can send and receive friend requests using an email address or Game Center nickname, revealing the first and last name associated with each party’s Apple ID and, in the case of email requests, the sender’s email address. The app allows kids to chat with strangers, potentially creating some safety risks if personal information is exchanged.

Is it any good?

iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch gamers craving something a little more intense than Angry Birds might consider downloading METALSTORM: ONLINE, a free aerial combat simulation that allows you to play online (Wi-Fi or 3G) against other players in real-time battles. You'll select an aircraft and weapon loadout before tilting your Apple device left and right to maneuver the fighter jet (and tapping to shoot missiles at enemy aircraft). MetalStorm: Online is a looker, as it features attractive 3-D graphics, fiery explosions, and realistic-looking mountains below you. Gamers can play against one another, engage in a cooperative mode, or play against the computer. The "freemium" title is free to play, but you'll likely want to buy virtual coins to spend at the in-game store for more goodies, such as better aircraft, weapons, and more. You'll also get credits for free by performing well, which can also be used as currency. Gamers in search of a modern aerial combat sim to play on their favorite iOS device should climb into the cockpit of the free MetalStorm: Online.

Fun
I like this game. Not so good for kids younger than 10, because you control a plane and you shoot enemies. No graphic violence though.

MetalStorm
It does have a quick use of D?@%, and it has shooting down ships. Kids can even learn about WW2.
