What parents need to know

Parents need to know that My Horse is a social sim that lets players collect 11 different breeds of horses, groom and feed them, and enter them in show jumping competitions with the goal of reaching the World Championship. The game is free to play, but players can spend real money to speed up the game, replenish energy, and purchase exclusive items. Users can share high scores via the Game Center social network, and post updates on Facebook, but participation is optional.

  • The app is very easy to play, with interactions limited to simple tapping and dragging gestures. Some of the mini-games require moderate reflexes, such as a show-jumping mini-game that requires players to tap at the correct time to clear jumps.

  • Full-screen ads for other games infrequently pop up during gameplay. Players can spend real money to speed up the game, replenish energy, and purchase exclusive items.
  • Some privacy concerns. Players can opt in to Apple's Game Center to track scores and achievements, and for some games, challenge friends. Players can send and receive friend requests using an email address or Game Center nickname, revealing the first and last name associated with each party's Apple ID and, in the case of email requests, the sender's email address. With iOS 5, players can opt to have a private or public profile, which can include a photo. With a public profile, your real name is visible to all other players, and Game Center will recommend you to other players using your real name. With a private profile, only your friends can see your real name, and Game Center will not recommend you to other players. Players can also share updates on Facebook.

Is it any good?

For anyone who's dreamed of owning their own horse, MY HORSE offers a glimpse into the world of stables and show-jumping. The app boasts high production values, and the level of realism and detail on the horses is impressive. But while there's ostensibly plenty to do, it's a shame that more of it isn't actually interactive. It's disappointing that some of the tasks that sound quite fun -- like renting your horse to the local fair to give rides to kids -- are only shown as timers that tick down before you can claim the reward, rather than a mini-game or animations in their own right. Kids might also be tempted to spend real-world money on perks like special saddles and riding gear, and to speed up the game to avoid waiting hours for tasks to get completed.
