What parents need to know

Parents need to know that My Very First App is an educational game that uses the artwork of well-known children's artist Eric Carle. The game's focus is on color identification and -- for older kids -- memorization; and it presents three levels, tailored for a wide range of toddlers. Additional in-app purchases, each for $.99, can expand the content to include animal sounds, shapes, and food.

  • All of the puzzles are age appropriate, but the app's "tap and hold" feature, which is meant to help little kids avoid accidentally leaving the game, is actually as much a hindrance as it is a help.

  • A "More" button promising additional content beyond color-matching games takes users to a store, where they can purchase add-ons for this app. The add-ons include numbers, animal sounds, shapes, and food. Because this app has so little content, it feels like a marketing tool to get you to buy the other card sets displaying Eric Carle's artwork. Also, a "more apps" link takes users to a page letting users buy the developer's other offerings.

Is it any good?

My Very First App is good at what it does, but unfortunately, it doesn't do an awful lot. The color identification games it offers are useful and have varying degrees of difficulty, making the app useful for a range of age groups. And Eric Carle's distinctive artwork is, as always, wonderful to look at, but you're paying a premium for it here. From a strictly educational standpoint, you can get a more complete set of learning tools for the same amount somewhere else. But if you're a fan of Carle and willing to pay a bit extra for it, this app will easily satisfy you.
