What parents need to know

Parents need to know that NewtonApples is a fast-paced arcade game cleverly based around Isaac Newton's laws of physics. While Sir Isaac naps under an apple tree, you need to make sure his slumber isn't disturbed by an apple falling on his head. As the game progresses, the apple activity will get much more frantic -- and you'll need to perform different maneuvers to stop different colored apples (pop red ones, slice green ones) plus you also need to flick away falling leaves and hold down squirming worms. In addition, there are two minigames: one a worm-steering maze game, and the other (strangely enough) a zombie defense game. There's some violence in the zombie game, but it is unrealistic and not bloody or gory.

  • The game starts off pretty easy and gradually gets much more challenging. There's a nice learning curve built in.
  • In a zombie minigame, you stop the undead by throwing apples at them. The apples knock off their body parts one by one, but there is no blood or gore -- the body parts simply fall away.

Is it any good?

NEWTONAPPLES has such a fun and clever concept -- protect a sleeping Sir Isaac Newton from falling apples. When you combine that with the app's whimsical artwork, which includes random elements like E.T. on a bike flying by in the background, and the app's smooth controls, you've got yourself a winner. With its variety of popping, slicing, and flicking, the game plays like a mash-up of other popular app arcade games. The game's bizarre sense of humor shows in comically strange touches, like evil apples that wear masks and the entire zombie mini-game (zombies? in an Isaac Newton game?), but it all goes to create an enjoyably wacky experience. That you can actually "win" real physics lessons is right in keeping with it all.

6 and beyond...
Great fun way for my kids to learn or at least be aware of Newton's Laws of motion! Gravity and its ilk... I can take it from there ;-)
