What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Pictello is an easy-to-use way to create "storybooks" or talking photo albums from the images in your device's photo library. You choose a picture for each page, type in text, and can either have that text read by a computerized narrator, or record yourself reading it. It feels like it should be a complicated process, but it's incredibly easy to learn and use, even for kids. Know that your photo books can be shared, either as emailed iTunes files, or via Pictello's universal server. You need to provide an email to join Pictello, but other users can only download your photo books if you give them a code.

  • The story-building feature is surprisingly simple to use. You pull photos from your device's library, type in text, and pick a narration method. Newcomers can use the "Wizard" method that leads you through the process step-by-step, but veterans can use the quicker "Expert" method.

  • There are two methods for sharing your created storybooks: export them to your computer as iTunes files, or by upload them to the Pictello server. You need to open a free account to use the Pictello server. Other Pictello users can only download your storybook if you give them its individual code.

Is it any good?

PICTELLO is not only a great way for kids to learn about story structure and to practice their spelling and reading; it's also a fabulously fun way to save and share family memories. The stories you create are essentially talking photo albums -- and the computerized narration (though it's bound to have a couple of stumbling moments) sounds remarkably smooth and realistic. The app comes with one male and one female voice, but you can download more for free, including child voices. Of course, you can also record your own narration. In addition, you can choose different visual methods for making the pages turn. The app may be pricey, but it's a high-quality product that most families could make great use of. It is great app to use while on vacation to create stories as you travel along.

Great idea, but not worth the $$$
Given how expensive (A$20) it is, the product was more rudimentary than I imagined (no editing of pictures, only photo illustrations, poor voicing) and the tech support (pdf files on the web) was good when eventually found but that wasn't easier. It was cool (and necessary) to record our own voice, but very tricky to find out how to share stories, and ULTRA disappointing to discover the carefully crafted story could only be shared with voicing if the intended recipients also forked out $$$ for Pictello! It could be emailed as a pdf file, but that was small consolation after she'd spent so long recording her voice for distant family too.
