What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Pocket RPG iPhone Edition is a fantasy game that lets players explore mysterious dungeons and face off against all sorts of enemy creatures. This is a port of the game Pocket RPG, which was originally released on the iPad. Players choose a character class ("Blade Master," "Dark Ranger," or "Battle Mage") and embark on a journey to rid the land of evil monsters and creatures. Much of the game takes place in dark, expansive dungeons that take time and strategy to navigate, so it is a cerebral experience as much as it is anything else. Users can share high scores via the Game Center social network, but participation is optional.

    Players have to figure out how to navigate through the maze-like dungeons, and must stay on top of their game to take down the swarms of small creatures that appear. In addition, the battles themselves can be challenging, especially the protracted end-of-level boss battles, which require stamina and skill. The game uses a touchscreen control system that takes some getting used to and can sometimes interfere with the action on the screen.

    Depending on the type of character players choose, they'll either fight in hand-to-hand sword fights, or battle from a distance using magic spells. Either way, the violence is depicted in a very fantastical style. Players equip their character with weapons (swords, spells, etc.) and then fire off those weapons to take down the ghosts, plant monsters, blob creatures, etc., that get in their way. Creatures disappear when defeated, though some leave behind a splotch of colorful liquid that looks like blood but is never red.

POCKET RPG IPHONE EDITION is a slimmed-down version of the original Pocket RPG game, which was initially released only for the iPad. It ends up working well on the iPhone, with impressive graphics and an ability to play for short bursts at a time. However, what continues to be one of the more frustrating aspects of the game is that it does not act as a traditional RPG when it comes to leveling up characters. In every mission, players have to start from square one, meaning any progress they made in the previous mission does not carry over. For serious RPG fans, this will be a big problem, but for casual players who just want an accessible and fun fantasy game, this one will fit the ticket.
