What parents need to know

Parents need to know that PopOut! The Tale of Peter Rabbit is a charming retelling of the classic children's tale. Younger children can enjoy the interactive version on their own, while children who are learning to read will find just as much value. As they read, they're able to tap words on the screen for prompts when they get stuck. The pop-up elements, meanwhile, are plentiful and non-intrusive -- and are as much fun for adults as they are for children.

  • Page turns require just a swipe of the finger -- and it's easy to follow the text since words are highlighted as they're read.
  • Peter is chased and almost caught by Mr. McGregor throughout most of the book, which might scare very young readers.

Is it any good?

Loud Crow Interactive hits one out of the park with their first app. PopOut! The Tale of Peter Rabbit is one of the best children's book adaptations we've seen. The reading interactive elements are stellar -- but what makes the app really stand out is its detailed use of sound and movement with the pop-up elements. Every image is filled with several interactive elements that will enthrall children and adults. Flick the leaves falling from trees in the artwork and they'll come floating out into the book. Touch Peter or his siblings and they'll giggle with delight. The narration and music, meanwhile, are soothing and bring Beatrix Potter's classic tale to life. It takes the children's book app to a new level -- and is worth every penny of its higher-than-other-book-apps price tag.

Great app that infuses a new technology with the beauty of old-school pop-ups.
This PopOut book is just an amazing iPad experience. If you've used iPad book apps for kids, you've come to expect the highlight-as-you-read narration and the choice to read it yourself or have the narrator read. This book, though, features gorgeous illustrations that come alive as you touch different parts of them. There are falling leaves that leap from the picture and float along the screen, blackberries to pick along with the rabbits, and tabs reminiscent of old-school pop-up books that create motion and beauty. The background music (which can be turned off) is a nice touch, too. My 4-year-old son has been listening to the story and is still discovering little hidden surprises in the illustrations. Simply gorgeous.

Not as good as rated!
Despite the reviews, I found this app disappointing. Compared to Moonbot Studios, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr Morris Lessmore, priced the same, it is inferior in quality and presentation.
