What parents need to know

Parents need to know that PopOut! The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin is an interactive retelling of the Beatrix Potter children's tale. Squirrel Nutkin gets in a dire situation after taunting and showing no respect for an old owl. The owl grabs him and is about to skin him. To escape, Nutkin breaks off his own tail. The story is not graphic and kids just see a squirrel running away with only half a tail. The app is equally fun for children who want to play with the pop-up elements and those who are learning to read. Users are able to tap words on the screen for audio prompts when reading on their own or can choose to have the story narrated to them. Separate apps are available for the iPad and iPhone/iTouch, but the content is the same. Popout! The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin for iPad costs more.

Is it any good?

 

The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin might be a bit less well-known than Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit, but Loud Crow Interactive shows the story as much devotion as it did with its previous interpretation of that author's work. The interactive reading parts are once again top notch, but it's the pop-up elements that truly stand out. Users can pluck falling tree leaves or crabapples out of drawings and make the squirrels chatter and hop on screen. These interactive elements are charming. The narration is soothing and the music calming. It's a complete interactive package -- and perfect for all ages.
