What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Princess Dress-Up: My Sticker Book is a more of a creative application than a digital book. There is a brief three-page "story" for each princess that explains why she needs a special outfit, but they are more like introductions than stories. Each princess is attending a special party or event and needs help choosing an outfit. Kids can choose a dress, gloves, hat, and purse. They can then zoom in to add accessories like a crown or necklace. Kids can also insert their own face in the pictures as well. Completed outfits can be saved in the photo gallery or emailed. The princesses included are Cinderella, Ariel, Belle, Aurora (Sleeping Beauty), Jasmine, Tiana, and Snow White. This app was significantly revised for version 2.0.

  • In theory, the drag and drop nature of the app should be easy enough for even really young kids. But the dresses don't all fit each princess, and they don't snap into place, so it can be hard to get them to line up properly. The menu icon in the bottom right of the screen is both appealing and easy to hit accidentally (especially for small children) and takes you to a menu system that may be difficult for kids to navigate.

  • Jasmine exposes a little cleavage and a lot of midriff.

  • Every page of the app has an icon with Mickey Mouse's ears poking out behind a book. It serves as a navigation tool for the app, allowing you to choose a specific page or to adjust settings. But it also has a banner at the top that links to the App Store, where you can buy more Disney apps. You'll also find a large ad for Disney Digital Books, which includes links to the publisher's site.
  • Potential privacy issues. The app allows the user to share their creations via email, and also to enter their email address to receive more information from the company. There is no in-app privacy policy to explain what, if any, information the app collects about its users. Users can share their creations, which may include a real photo, but these are sent via email, which can be disabled.

Is it any good?

PRINCESS DRESS-UP: MY STICKER BOOK is likely to be a popular choice for young princess fans who like dress-up games. It's fun to choose just the right outfit for each princess and her special occasion, and there is plenty of freedom to create unique looks each time through. With a variety of dresses and accessories, there are more than enough combinations to entertain even the most fashion-conscious little girl. Unfortunately, each princess has different undergarments, and they don't all fit under every outfit. If you want to put a Jasmine-style outfit on Belle, for example, you're out of luck. The app would also benefit from the option to have clothing snap into place, which would make it easier for younger children to use. Disney made significant revisions to the original version, which dramatically enhanced gameplay, but also increased the price. Still, it's a high-quality app that will please young princess fans.
