What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Princess Fairy Tale Maker – by Duck Duck Moose is an app that lets kids color and create their own fairy tales. In the main activity, kids choose a scene or use their own photos, then choose from a variety of characters (such as princesses and ballerinas) and stickers (such as flowers and food). They can also draw or write on the scene, choosing from various colors of pencils and crayons. Once the scene is created, kids can record their own voice or noises while moving around the characters and stickers, resulting in a story with action and sound. Princess Fairy Take Maker also includes a mode where kids can use ready-made templates and fill them in with color -- and even make it sparkle.

  • Overall, creating and saving drawings and stories is intuitive. However, Princess Fairy Tale Maker doesn't give any instruction, which may be needed for some of the editing features.

What's it about?

In Princess Fairy Tale Maker, kids can choose from 32 background scenes, almost 200 different stickers, and many colors to create stories. The orientation and size of the stickers can be easily edited. When ready to record the action and soundtrack, kids simply hit the record button. During the recording, kids can move the stickers around to illustrate plot points, but they can no longer draw or alter the stickers. Kids can also color ready-made templates, and save all their creations.

Is it any good?

Princess Fairy Tale Maker – by Duck Duck Moose is a great app to encourage kids to get creative. There's not much in terms of instruction, feedback, or prompts about storytelling. Instead, Princess Fairy Tale Maker lets kids explore and just have fun with it. Kids can create some interesting art with atypical fairy tale settings, such as putting a princess in a photo of their own home or on the moon.

The illustrations are charming, and the characters are racially diverse. Though there are lots of choices, the types of characters are a little "girly" with fairies, princesses, ballerinas, and hula girls; it's a princess app, so that's expected. But the process of making your own animated tale is fun for all.

How kids will learn

Princess Fairy Tale Maker offers an engaging way to encourage kids to get creative in art and storytelling. Without a lot of direction or story prompts, the app empowers kids to tell their stories in their own way. Though many of the settings and characters are in typical fairy tale style such as the princess in the castle, some allow for creating non-stereotypical fairy tales, such as a princess in outer space.

How parents can help

  • Play along and be a character in the story.
  • Guide your kids as they create the story by asking and prompting about plot elements.
  • Help kids think outside the box and create inventive and atypical fairy tales.

Really nice app
My 5-year old daughter loves this app. But the cost was a little high. Also the graphics should have been improved. Just saw another colorful rhyme priced at $0.99 named "Row Row Your Boat" which my daughter likes equally.

Great app for the imagination
This has been a fun app from the get go. And once my daughter realized she could record her telling her own stories our love for it exploded! Fun to play together or alone.
