What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Race illegal: High Speed 3D is a street racing game that encourages players to ram other vehicles to gain an advantage in the race. That can range from sparks flying as vehicles rub against each other at high speeds to slow motion head-on collisions. The damage done to your car in those collisions impacts its driving ability, so some real-world consequences are demonstrated.

  • The game's controls are fairly easy to grasp and don't overwhelm the screen, but the courses can be tricky to navigate.
  • Drivers can drive into oncoming traffic and hit other cars, which is shown in dramatic slow motion. In some races, they're also encouraged to run other racers off of the road.

  • A link to more apps from the developer is buried in one of the submenus that can be selected from the main screen.
  • Some privacy concerns. Players can opt in to Crystal, an interactive network that allows users to upload real avatar photos, create a profile, set location, post scores on leaderboards, add friends, post status messages, and connect with Facebook friends or Twitter followers. The Crystal privacy policy states that it may collect and use information including name, email address, a phone’s Unique Device ID, and IP address. Crystal gives users the option to disagree to terms and conditions, after which new personal data will not be stored on their servers. This will reduce the functionality of the Crystal network for the user.

Is it any good?

RACE ILLEGAL isn't a bad racing game, per se, but there's nothing notable enough about it that it will excite fans of the genre. It is, in many ways, a paint-by-numbers title, with a forgettable story, lots of lens flare, winding tracks, "edgy" collision models, and slow motion head-on impacts. The graphics aren't overly impressive, though, and the game often feels slow compared to other entries in the category. Whether you're a core racing fan or someone who just dabbles in the games, you can probably find something better.
