What parents need to know

Parents need to know that SaveTheSushi is similar to Sushi Monster in its game-like approach to math practice, but focuses solely on multiplication of numbers 2 through 9. In place of traditional math problems, kids must identify the multiples of a number. Shadowy characters pass across the screen with numbers on their heads, and kids must tap quickly to catch the right ones. Two modes of play and three difficulty levels offer kids variations on the game, including a multiplayer option to compete against friends taking turns on the same device.

  • The app is fairly easy to use and play. Kids identify multiples of given numbers by tapping on them as they zoom across the screen. There are two modes of play with three levels of difficulty that ramp up gradually. The higher levels require kids to practice slightly more advanced multiplication. Reading skills will help kids navigate the app.

  • When kids tap the Badges option on the main menu, a screen opens advertising more apps from the developer. Confusing buttons on this screen make it easy (and likely) for kids to unintentionally end up at the iTunes store.

What kids can learn

3

Kids can learn multiples of the numbers 2 through 9 as they practice multiplication and division in this high-energy math game. For each round, kids see a number at the top of the screen and must quickly tap on multiples of that number. For example, if the number is 3, they can tap 3, 6, 9, or any other number that divides evenly by three. To identify the multiples, kids must think in reverse, accessing their knowledge of multiplication tables as well as calculating problems using division skills. SaveTheSushi builds up kids' multiplication and division skills with engaging gameplay and just the right amount of challenge.

What's it about?

Kids choose between two modes of play, campaign or arcade, and set the level at easy, medium, or hard. In both modes, kids see a number at the top of the screen and must tap on its multiples as numbers pass by on the heads of characters. Campaign mode has ten increasingly challenging stages. Arcade mode gives kids a time limit within which to beat their best scores. Before each round of play, a text-only tutorial screen briefly reminds kids of the basics of gameplay. Kids can also compete against friends taking turns on the same device.

Is it any good?

In SAVETHESUSHI, kids join the Yogome Squad to save the Golden Sushi from Evil Queen Ignorantia. With fun music, arcade-like sound effects, and cool graphics, this app will definitely catch kids' attention. The gameplay options and design make it possible for kids to practice at their own pace. And the gameplay is great for strengthening both multiplication and division skills because kids must think in reverse as they decide which numbers are multiples.

Campaign stages and high scores are great motivators for players to do better; however, there is no explanation for how to earn the badges, making them feel like empty rewards. Kids can choose their own avatars (Yogotars), but might be disappointed at the lack of diversity in the options. Despite these minor complaints, SaveTheSushi offers kids a fun way to practice math skills.

How kids will learn

SaveTheSushi allows kids to choose from three levels, matching the challenge to their own comfort zone and learning needs. Within each level, the problems gradually increase in difficulty, giving kids larger numbers to calculate as they advance. Before each round, a text-only tutorial page pops up to remind kids what multiples are; however, kids just learning multiplication might need a more thorough explanation before jumping into the game. The multiplayer mode boosts motivation and fun by allowing kids to compete against friends.

How parents can help

  • If your kids are struggling with SaveTheSushi, take a moment to review multiplication with them and explain the concept of multiples. Use groups of coins to illustrate the idea of multiples in a concrete way.
  • Allow kids to check out math websites like Cyberchase or StudyJams!
