What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Scene It? Harry Potter HD is an electronic version of the popular movie trivia game. Focusing entirely on the Harry Potter films, the app tests the knowledge of fans of the series with 16 different types of puzzles, ranging from voice identification to matching characters with their houses at Hogwarts. Some questions are relatively simple, but others dig deep into the mythology that is part of the Harry Potter world. The app is very much a sales vehicle for the Scene It? brand, though, and can become a bit intrusive. Players can compete against others either on the same iPad or via WiFi or Bluetooth, but not online. And the game has Facebook and Twitter integration features, letting players brag about their score. This is the review of the iPad version, but there is a similar iPhone/iPod version called Scene It? Harry Potter for less money at $1.99.

    The game moves at a good pace and is very intuitive for players of all ages.

    Scenes from the films occasionally show wizard battles or scuffling on the Quidditch field. Some of the creatures shown could be too scary and intense for young viewers.

Is it any good?

 

Even if you've seen all of the Harry Potter films and have a good knowledge of the series' mythology, you're bound to stumble across some head-scratchers in Scene It? Harry Potter HD. The app is a fun trivia challenge that will likely make you want to watch the films or read the books again and illustrates just how vibrant and rich a world J. K. Rowling has created. The use of local multiplayer is a fun one, as playing in the same room increases the intensity of playing against someone (versus an anonymous online interaction). The app's in-your-face marketing of other products, though, along with occasional lock-up problems during film clips detracts from the fun -- and starts to make the $4.99 price tag seem a bit high.

Violence: In some clips there are some battles and intense creatures. Consumerism: The app is loaded with ads. Privacy and safety: People can connect to their facebook account to brag about their scores.
